This is a radiological examination of the stomach, oesophagus and upper digestive tract.

How do I prepare for this examination?

Adults: Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before until after the examination is complete.

Children younger than 2 years old: Hold the last feed before the examination.

Process: You will be asked to sit or stand while images of your body are viewed in real time on a monitor. X-rays are taken during and after the patient has swallowed a pleasantly flavoured barium suspension.

Radiographs are taken in a variety of positions that will clearly demonstrate the anatomy.
