What is it?
This is a radiological examination of the stomach, oesophagus and upper digestive tract.
How is it performed?
You will be asked to sit or stand while images of your body are viewed in real time on a monitor. X-rays are taken during and after the patient has swallowed a pleasantly flavoured barium suspension.
Radiographs are taken in a variety of positions that will clearly demonstrate the anatomy.
How do I prepare for this examination?
Adults: Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before until after the examination is complete.
Children younger than 2 years old: Hold the last feed before the examination.
